Foreword

I want to take a moment to share my views on the duties of a Kyungpook National University (KNU) Freshman English Instructor. I take very serious the trust and responsibility KNU has entrusted in me to guide and teach the future leaders, industrialists, professionals, academics, musicians, artists, businesspeople, fathers, mothers, and global citizens of Korea. I feel Korea and KNU has given me a sacred trust in guiding their children on a path of discovery to become not only productive citizens but also well-adjusted ones who have a chance to experience culture beyond their own through the Freshman English program.  I am very proud to be part of the Freshman English Program and the work I have done here so far.  Because my wife and children are Korean, I am invested in Korea and the Freshman English Program at KNU. Thus, in the eleven years I have been teaching at Kyungpook National University through sickness and health, and snowstorms and heat waves, I have never missed even one of my 221 classes that I have taught in the Freshman English program. Each and everyone one of my past 4,121 students and my future students are the reason why I stay at the KNU Freshman English Program. I believe so strongly in the program that I hope when my son and daughter are old enough, they too will attend KNU and take the Freshman English courses.  I believe I offer quality education to quality students at one of the leading academic institutions in Korea, Kyungpook National University. Finally, do not let the name the Program mislead you. KNU students from freshmen to seniors to non-traditional students and exchange students as well as students from surrounding area universities have taken this course, and their linguistic growth in the program has  occurred through their sociocognitive and affective growth experienced during the program learning how to become lifelong learners.  In an information age, it is extremely important to become lifelong learners, and I feel teaching students how to learn is my most important duty and responsibility.
